Inside this issue:

2% is back

The Co-op would like to thank all our loyal members for sticking with us through the past few years of financial difficulty. Without you, the Co-op does not exist.

Thanks to you, we are getting back on our feet!

Due to increased sales and only a slight growth in expenses, we are pleased to announce that the Board of Stewards has reinstated the 2% discount for non-working members as of January 9th.

This means that as a current member, you will receive a discount on all of your purchases every time you shop at the Co-op, even if you don’t have work credit!

So, if you have work credit your discount is 7% and if you don’t your discount is 2%. Even if you have a " non-working" membership, there is always opportunity to volunteer at the store to increase your discount!

Some of you may not have been in the store since the reset in September. Now is a great time to stop in to see the Co-op’s new look and take advantage of the reinstated discount!

SEE YOU SOON!

Avoiding Trans Fats

Our focus as a grocer is on healthy, natural foods, so the science of food confronts Co-op staff on a daily basis. That’s why we took such notice when the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) issued a report on "trans fat" recently.

While the Co-op emphasizes healthy choices, we offer a range of products that meet the desires and needs of many different members and shoppers. Whatever your choice, we’ve paid special attention for years due to health concerns to one ingredient that can be found on our shelves: hydrogenated oils.

Hydrogenation is a process that converts liquid vegetable oil into a shelf-stable, solid or semi-solid substance. Hydrogenation also retards rancidity, making it perfect for shelf stable products.

The process involves high heat, a metal catalyst such as nickel, zinc, or copper, and hydrogen gas. Hydrogen is bubbled into a liquid vegetable oil; the metals catalyze the hydrogen and carbon atoms, converting the fatty acids to produce a substance similar to a saturated fat that remains solid at room temperature. These synthetic saturated fats are called trans fatty acids, or just trans fats. But the NAS study found that there is no safe amount of trans fat in the diet. Partially hydrogenated oils are in about 40 percent of the food on grocery store shelves, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Even products marked "low in cholesterol" or "low in saturated fat" might have high levels of trans fat.

The American Heart Association reports that in clinical studies, trans fats can raise total blood cholesterol levels. Furthermore, they tend to raise LDL ("bad") cholesterol, and lower HDL ("good") cholesterol levels.

What you buy is your choice, but I encourage you to consider the risks associated with hydrogenated oils. Choose a natural alternative for the health of you and your loved ones. We’ve collected a list of alternative products.

Newman’s Own Organics uses palm oil as an alternative to hydrogenated oil in cookies. Natural palm oil is not hydrogenated, contains no trans fats, is lower in saturated fat than butter and contains no cholesterol. For baking, canola oil or Spectrum Natural’s organic shortening (again, with palm oil) are good alternatives to hydrogenated shortening. Butter, Ghee (clarified butter), palm oil, palm kernal (seed) oil, cocomut oil and lard are alternatives to hydrogenated oils. Before the middle of the last century, these were used when a solid or semi-solid oil was called for. The key is to use these natural oils in healthy moderation.

Avoid trans fats by avoiding hydrogenated and fractionated oils!

Here are some products with no hydrogenated oils — some may contain dairy products with some trans fats. Sensible eating of a balanced diet rich in unprocessed grains, fruits and vegetables is your best defense against heart and circulatory problems.

New Employees

Along with the recent renovations to our store, the Co-op is proud to introduce several fabulous new employees.

First came Chuck. Originally from Tennessee, this lover and soon to be breeder of Great Danes, is sure to cut your cheese! Just like the cheese he picks, Chuck is an "Udder Delight."

As for Jim, you may have seen him using his healing hands of reflexology at the store’s Grand Re-opening. This wonderfully spiritual man has brought us a world of kindness.

Our most enthusiastic new employee is Brandy. You may find her doing what she loves best, helping our customers. Her warm and friendly smile can always brighten the darkest of days.

We are also fortunate to have the health food experience of Leanne with us. She is the mother of two adorable daughters. You’ll just go ga-ga over the baby food selection she has in store for you.

Next, we have our little ray of sunshine, Kara, who quickly became a Co-op staff favorite. You may have seen her at another Main Street gem, Crystal Concepts.

Next there’s Tanya. This easy going and magical woman enjoys spending time with her new kitten, Isis, and listening to music. Her sweetness quickly gained her the status of the Queen Bee of the bulk honey.

Mike has also come to brighten up the Co-op with his youthful, positive energy. When he’s not busy helping create a fun loving and productive work environment, he dedicates himself to his studies in architectural engineering at DelTech.

Last, but definitely not least, we have Andy, our personal ambassador to our Canadian neighbors. His quick wit and friendly demeanor has charmed many a customer, as well as his fellow staff!

Next time you’re in the Co-op, be sure to say "HI," we can‘t wait to meet you!

Suggestion Box

We love to hear from you! Here are a few comments from the SUGGESTION BOX and staff responses...

"Need one more table for eating lunch."
One of our members is currently working on an eating bar that will go across the large front window of the store. It should be completed around the middle of February.
– Mary

"Please could we have an organic salad bar? Not fun to eat pesticide veggies all the time!"
Unfortunately, we just don’t have the space in our current location. Luckily, The Main Squeeze juice bar just opened in Market East Plaza and now Newark has an organic option for lunch! They have delicious wraps and salads!
- Janey

"I like your cards!"
Thanks! Keep your eye out for new and seasonal cards all year!
– Jo-Anne

(The SUGGESTION BOX is located at the front of the store.)

Heart Healthy Recipes

So what exactly is a heart healthy recipe? First, you should know that foods low in saturated fats, cholesterol, and high on fiber are good for your heart's health. So when you're searching for heart healthy recipes, look for recipes that contain low saturated fat, and low cholesterol.

A healthy heart recipe should also contain other essential nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals. These heart healthy nutrients can be found in vegetables, grains, and fruits. Avoid using foods high in fat content. If possible, use low fat versions for a healthy heart recipe meal.
