Lockbriar Farm is a family-run business, owned and operated by Wayne and Marcella Lockwood. The original farm, located in rural Cecil County, Maryland was developed on land owned by the Frazier family dating back to the 1800's.
We have been growing fruits and vegetables since 1989. We started out growing strawberries, which were sold wholesale to roadside stands and supermarkets. After a few years, we decided to shift our operation towards retail. In doing so, we were able to diversify into vegetables and other fruits. Help with variety selection and growing methods was obtained from the University of Maryland Wye Research Center and USDA Fruit Research Station in Kearnysville, W.V. We also attended conferences every year to stay abreast of new technology, varieties, etc. As we continued to grow, we added raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, gooseberries, currants, and elderberries plus a full line of vegetables including sugar corn, cantaloupes, watermelons, and tomatoes- including High Tunnel/early tomatoes, which we sold on the Farm and at Farmer's Markets.
Now that we've relocated from Cecil County to Kent County, we are replanting everything including peaches, apples, plums, apricots and sweet cherries. Our farm will be open to "U-Pick" this year (2007) starting with strawberries in May, followed by raspberries. Blueberries, along with apples, peaches, and plums will be open to U-Pick in 2008 and in 2009, apricots and sweet cherries.
Here, at Lockbriar Farms, we strive to grow the best quality fruits and vegetables possible, using IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices and reduced spraying with organic products whenever possible. We are committed to a cleaner, healthier environment for our family, farm, and community.
We hope to see you soon. While you're online today, please visit Lockbriar Farms and check out our "Fruit" and "Vegetables" web pages or if you're interested in agriculture, see "Growing Berries".

Maple Hill Farm is located just across the PA state line, where we share a border with Lincoln University. We grow a multitude of fruits and vegetables. Our goal is to farm in a manner that is self-sustaining.
Rather than rely on tractors for power, we use draft horses. In addition to our horses, we keep a flock of approximately 275 hens for our egg sales, and a cow or two for our family's milk needs. The manure from our diversified livestock base goes back to the fields to supply the nutrients for our crops. We grow all of the feed for our animals, so we have created a farming system that is self-sustaining. Inputs grown on the farm fuel the source of power for the farm which in turn provides the fertility to grow the inputs.
In order to have a minimal impact on the environment we try to minimize the use of plastic mulch by pulling weeds the old-fashioned way. We also save seeds (never using genetically modified seeds) and will only use chemical sprays as a last resort.
Maple Hill Farm supplies the Co-op with it's Free Range Eggs year-round and provides Bedding Plants, Herbs & Flowers seasonally.

Daylilies have been called the perfect perennial-and we agree! They are hardy, drought tolerant and low maintenance. Modern hybrids are very different than the roadside "tiger lily". Through the efforts of hybridizers of the last 50 years, daylilies are available in every color except blue. Plain or fancy, there is something for every taste. We have just over 600 named varieties, from the older classics to newer varieties with eyes and edges. Blooms begin in late May and continue through August and into September. Peak bloom time is mid-June to mid-July. Potted plants are available for purchase and bare root plants can be ordered for September pick-up. Bare root hostas are available in spring and fall. Asiatic and Oriental lilies are available in pots in the summer. The following perennials are available spring through fall: Astilbe, Coral Bells, Columbine, Coreopsis, Salvia (Sage), and Veronica.
We are located at 496 Old Elk Neck Road, North East, MD. Please call 410-287-5980 for information or email Frog Forest Gardens- John & Dottie Bennett

Nick Castelli of Family Tree has been growing plants for over 35 years at his home in Nottingham, PA. He has a green house and cold frame, and starts many plants from seed. He recycles everything, including pots and containers that come from other larger companies' trash! He uses as many organic and natural treatments as possible. This past winter, he heated his greenhouse with a woodstove. He also keeps a giant vegetable garden. Nick has been attending farmers markets and fairs for years with his fun and unusual varities of cacti and succulents, vegetable plants, house plants, annuals, bedding plants, perennials and orchids. He is happy to answer any of your plant care questions.

Located near Kennett Square in Pennsylvania, North Star Orchard specializes in new and unique varieties of asian pears and apples. We are a small orchard of 10 acres, which are planted at two locations, one on Stargazers Rd., the other in Avondale, PA.
Our first trees were planted in 1992. We chose only those varieties of apples and pears that we felt would develop superb flavor in this area. In making this decision, we also ruled out the typical commercial varieties (Red Delicious, McIntosh, etc.) that are available to consumers...choosing rather to plant some of the many other varieties that people normally do not ever see in grocery stores. Several of our apple varieties are antique varieties, and many more are very new, disease-resistant varieties.
We grow several varieties of asian pears. Also known as apple pears, nashi, and oriental pears, they are closely related to European pears, but are not a cross of apples and pears, as many people think. Asian pears are crunchy, sweet, juicy, and may be eaten peeled or unpeeled. They are a great addition to salads, and can be used in cooking in any way you would use either apples or pears.
We expanded our plantings a few years ago to include cherries, plums, peaches and raspberries...again, being very selective in planting flavorful varieties, not necessarily the "typical" varieties.
We sell our fruit in season. Most of the varieties we grow can not be stored in our coolers much beyond the end of November and still retain the quality we require. It is our goal to deliver the freshest fruit you can get with ideal eating quality for that variety. Therefore, you can find us at farmer's markets from July thru November only.
We do not have a farm market at our farm, but sell all of our fruit at farmer's markets such as the one at the Newark Co-op. 2007 will be our seventh year participating in the Newark Co-op Farmers' Market, and we look forward to seeing you there!
Please feel free to contact us if you need any further information.
